Mandalay and its environment is an area that is drenched in history. Travelling from Yangon means going back in history, back to the area that can be considered as the true royal heartland of the Bamar people. Beforehand, I expected that Yangon and Bagan would be the places of most interest to me but it was Mandalay that proved to be the biggest surprise of my holiday, Sagaing being the absolute highlight. Sagaing went on where Bagan stopped. It is smaller than Bagan but it gives an impression on how Bagan may have looked in its full glory: an area literaly dotted with temples and pagoda's.

In these series I have made selections of pictures grouped in the pages above. The first page shows general pictures of Mandalay, a gold leave factory and the Man Myanmar Hotel, next door to the Mintha Theater. In the Loneley Planet guide the suggestion is given to visit Mandalay Hill as a first item, so that is what I did, pictures in the second series. A classical dance at the Mintha Theatre is highly recommended, see the 3rd series. The city of Mandalay is dominated by the Royal Palace, see the 4th series. True, almost touchable history can be experienced in Amarapura (5th series). Sagaing (6th series) and Inwa (7th series).
