Shwezigon Paya is a temple in a very good state. For visitors staying in Nyaung U the shining pagoda is a daily joy to watch, whether in the early morning, hot afternoon or after dark when te pagoda is beautifully lit. Shwezigon Paya was built during the reign of King Anawrahta but completed by King Kyanzittha. Its importance is that the style used for the pagoda is adopted for all other pagodas to be built in Bagan and even in the whole of Myanmar. King Anawrahta accepted Theravada Buddhism as the new religion for him and his subjects; the style of the pagoda to reflect this.
